Photographers once again gather in London to protest being treated as Terrorists
I've been meaning to spread word about this for a bit. There is a fairly scary movement in regards to some of the overcompensation paranoia of terrorism that is targeting photographers, press, and free speech in general. Laws in the U.K., U.S. and elsewhere are eroding the rights of photographers, both press and citizen.
Today, January 23, the website "I'm a Photographer, not a Terrorist" (http://photographernotaterrorist.org/) is holding another protest in Trafalgar Square at noon. So if you're a Londoner with a camera and want to preserve free speech, please support this movement!
The gathering is similar to one organized last year in front of Scotland Yard to protest additional laws to Section 44 of the Terrorism Act making photographing the police or PSCO's illegal in the UK. This obviously puts the public at risk against police brutality and misbehehavior. It also jeopordizes the press's ability to do their jobs in covering news and acting as a watchdog.
This year's event is particularly in response to several of the high profile cases that have occurred such as "detaining an award winning architectural photographer in the City of London, the arrest of a press photographer covering campaigning santas at City Airport and the stop and search of a BBC photographer at St Pauls Cathedral and many others." This is all in addition to daily stopping, detaining, fining, and even arresting of citizen and tourist photographers in the U.K.
You may wonder why a U.S. citizen is keeping such a close watch on this U.K. news. Sadly, the U.S. is using the U.K. as an example and drafting it down this civil rights hole. Photographers on both continents are well aware of this growing myth, purported by our governments, that taking photographs is somehow "wrong" or "suspicious," even of normal tourist destinations.
Carlos Miller is a photojournalist in the U.S. who's blog focuses on the eroding rights and sentiments towards photographers and journalists. He also delves into other freedom of speech / first amendment cases and police misconduct. He was recently interviewed on a Chicago radio station in regards to new dispicable Chicago Transit Authority posters that tell riders to "call 911" if they see "excessive photography/filming" - whatever that is. This is despite the CTA's own website specifically allowing photography.
I could go on-and-on, but instead I'll leave you with a list of blogs for more information. I will however, add one more example. Last year, a man was arrested for photographing Amtrak trains. Why was he acting so suspiciously? He was a railfan photographing trains...for an Amtrak photography contest to win a trip on Amtrak.

We reported earlier about the TMZ "Ravishing Redheads" photo contest. The results are in!
TMZ released the 177 entries and put them up for voting. You can see all the entries here. There are a few familiar faces in the bunch, and some really wonderful photos - from professional quality to great subjects.
The final results were a little surprising after having looked through all 177 photos (some with multiple fiery redheads in the same photo), but still very nice. The final winning photo is here.
I apologize for not letting you know more about the stages of the contest, but there was so little information. It was unclear whether this contest was open to just U.S. residents or the whole world, and there was no deadline specifically posted. Hopefully, the next redhead photo contest TMZ holds will have more detailed rules and a longer entry duration.
Edit: Well, I just found the contest rules, not on the entry form page, but on the voting page.

TMZ's website is boasting a $250 top prize as well as "some secret mystery gifts" for winners of a redhead photo contest.
TMZ's Ravishing Redhead Contest
Unfortunately the site is a little low on details. It was posted last Wednesday, March 24, 2010 and I heard that they have contests like this weekly. So when is the deadline? Wednesday, March 31? Friday? Later? We just don't know.
Also, in photography circles of late, there has been criticism of how many rights are handed over in photography contests. Some photography sites track such contests and provide warnings for potential entrants. The sparse rules, seem to be on the level, but I'm not an expert. "You acknowledge you own all rights to the photograph and you hereby grant to TMZ the royalty-free and non-exclusive right to use your photograph(s) for any purpose and in any media, including without limitation, on the TMZ.com website and on the TMZ television program." This isn't much different than what you agree to on Facebook, YouTube, or Redhead World; you keep all rights, but grant them rights to display winners in their media and shows, as well as promotions. They also insist you and anyone in the photo has given consent for this usage.
To enter the contest, you just click on the graphic on TMZ's site and it will launch your local e-mail application. You attach the photos and provide your name and phone number. There seems to be no geographic limits either, but maybe that's covered under the TMZ website's terms? It is rather surprising at the lack of legal wording.
So, are any of you redheads going to be entering the contest?
