I play both electric and acoustic (nylon strings, not metal string) guitar.
At the moment not as much as I would like to but try to make time for every once in a while.
A few years back I was pretty active and played in two bands (not at the same time). In those bands we were writing our own songs and covering some other songs. Mostly rock, rock 'n roll and a bit of metal. Everybody moved to other places and even other countries (study, work, etc) and resulting in the fact that those bands stopped to exist.
A while later I started my own business and haven't had time since :)
I did trombome 5th-8th grade. Marching bass drum junior, and snare drum senior year along with concert band in high school.
I want to learn to sing before getting to serious on any instruments, but I have hopes for the keyboards, Irish tin whistle, and bódhran.
Wow, you know quite a lot of diverse intstruments Jenna
That's awesome that you got to perform in some bands, Wouter.
Acoustic guitar, for about 2 and a half years now, i mainly play strummy rock stuff (think foo fighters, stereophonics, travis etc..) Haven't got round to writing my own stuff yet but i'm sure i will do at some point :)
Hope to start learning violin in the near future (when i'm not too broke to pay for lessons!)
.... and maybe i'll learn piano and/or ocarina as well at some point
Wow this is an old topic. Hehe. Older than my membership I think.
In the past I have played: recorder (3 scales; soprano, alto and baritone. somehow.), violin (a little broken but still), voice/singing, keyboard (still do sometimes). Harmonica (pretty much a fail for me everytime!), penny whistle. *Silver/copper synth (*if that is an instrument).
I've always wanted to play electric guitar (my dad used to play electric bass in a band) and for some reason the oboe (which cost a lot, I must add). In my family there was a famous (for his time) opera singer (my great grandfather) and my mum did some opera training too. My great-great uncle on the other side of the family was the (mainly 70s) singer Roy Wood. He had a hit with a famous Christmas song, often either number 1 or 2 in the British Christmas song countdown (happens at least 10 times every Christmas on music channels).
The keyboard was definitely my most successful, especially when I upgraded for use with my music course. This is followed by the recorder, which was quite cool but I stopped playing that when I changed schools at 11.
The synth is probably the best for me, presently. It's quite fun in itself, and since I love computing, well.... I'm actually looking to upgrade to a newer software (probably royalty-free, I'm not sure about the one I have presently). My present one is now classed as 'old' (it only runs properly on XP. On Vista it says that my media player drivers are out of date. hehe). It's also limiting because it only has silver and copper synths and I need more!
This kind of software can cost a lot though, so I think I'm happy enough not to spend nearly $600 on new stuff at the moment.
I love playing with synths and resampling, sometimes mixing tracks too. Never had the need to allow anyone to use my synth generators though (or never let anyone). But yeah, if anyone wants to (and happens to be nearby at the time, obviously) I'll allow a go on my silver synth (the copper can be harder to use, for whatever reason. Even I haven't tried to combine silver and copper). I'm hoping to do that this year with one or two people.
I have been playing the Irish fiddle for about 6 years and have recently picked up the mandolin along with the Irish drum! Besides jamming with other musicians every Wednesday night at the pub I've been thinking what else I could do with my music. Maybe start an irish rock band??
I started out singing at about 3 my first instrument about the same age was the harmonica
I come from a long line of Musicans (mostly fiddle players) However by the time I was 11 I had mastered and gotten really bored with the Chromatic slide Harmonica plus it seemed that everybody else was able to play louder and drown me out quite easily. While my mother played Classical Violin and my father played Fiddle I was forbidden from touching their instruments because I had "hard touch" So I took up Bagpipes, then trumpet because the Highschool band was short 8 trumpet players (they only had 1 without me)and they had room for 10. We eventually had 6 before the end of the year
Then when I was in college I picked up Guitar, Banjo and Electric Baritone because I had to fill in for the regular guys in the one of the Bar bands that I was a male vocalist for. In 2004 I was in a bad Car accident couldnt hold anything as heavy as my other instruments so I picked up Mandolin.
In college I was a First tenor that was able to sing from Mid Baritone to not quite Mid Soprano. However In 2007 I was Diagnosed with throat cancer of the vocal chords ( I'm living proof that second hand smoke is dangerous) and after a number of surgeries was ordered not to sing for a year. I was really depressed about this so I went to see me cousin who I had played in a band with in college because he always gets me to laughing. My cousin is a master Flute maker and he gifted me with my first native american flute (one of his "stove peices!) it had been destined for the fire till he saw me light up and play it like it was one of his top of the line peices. After learning bagpipes every other instrument has been really easy for me . It being real easy to sound and light to hold It and I were inseparable for a long time. That is till he actually gifted me with a top of the line peice at Christmas in 2008.
I own an antique upright piano....can't play it ............yet
so there you go 8? Some of them very well and others well .......the neighborhood dogs are my vocalists
