The Great British Redhead Festival aka Gingerfest
The Great British Redhead Festival, which will take place on 10th April, this year. This will be the first ever UK national celebration of all things redhead/gingerish/auburn/strawberry-blonde and carrot-top... Taking place in Morley, Leeds on Saturday 10th April 2010, a free event, not-for-profit, and a fun day to make a light-hearted celebration of all things gingerish. There is no political angle, no bureaucrats and nobody taking offence at being called ginger.
The highlight of the day will be a mass photograph of hundreds (hopefully thousands) of redheads by the media.
10.00 am Meet-up Cucina, Queen Street with live music.
10.30 am Welcome by the Hon. Mayor of Morley, Mrs Varley.
11.00 am The Ginger Hoppity Horse Derby down Queen Street (Cucina to The Queens) with teams divided into England v Scotland v Ireland v Wales with prizes. Master of Ceremonies, the Hon. Paul Cockroft aka The Tingley Troll.
12.00 am Ernie Wise statue. A mass performance of the Parrock Nook Band. All attendees are asked to bring a ‘homemade' instrument (even if it is just a tin can and a stick), and familiarise themselves with three tunes: Edelweiss, The Entertainer and Rocking All Over the World. We shall then all play them together. Several hundred inept musicians in musical disharmony. Bedlam. There will be prizes. Master of Ceremonies, the Hon. Peter Mudge, Town Centre Manager.
1.00 pm The Mayor's Parlour. Presentation of the prize for the "Ginger Ninja" children's art competition by Secretary of State for Schools, Ed Balls. First prize, a £100 gift voucher donated by Land Securities/White Rose Centre. Runner-up prizes kindly donated by Soo Rayner and Tesco.
1.30 pm. The Council Chamber. We are also proud to announce a talk by Glyn Watkins, the author of The Wayne Jacobs Little Red Head Book - a book about red headed footballers and the mysteries of red hair. Glyn also organises The Great British Hat-throwing Championships and likes a pint.
At lunchtime, we shall have The Big Red Picnic in the Park in Scatcherrd Park with a few fun and games, do a bit of shopping/eating/drinking and attend the funfair with live music.
3.00 pm. The highlight of the day will be The Big Red Photo, a mass photograph of hundreds (hopefully thousands) of redheads by the media on the steps of Morley Town Hall sponsored by Redhead International Freight.
4.00 pm We shall end the day with a Big Red Chillout at Stush Bar & Club
Additional events to be updated. A guide to events will be distributed on the day courtesy of Ginger Design & Print Ltd.
The Great British Redhead Festival's nominated charity is The Lord Mayor of Leeds Appeal 2010. The Lord Mayor's appeal is supporting three charities, The Samaritans, Riding for the disables and CREATE.
If you are attending The GBRF and would like to make a weekend of it, the appeal is running a sponsored walk or ride in the luxurious grounds of Lotherton Hall on Sunday 11th April. Ideal opportunity to work off any excesses in this beautiful stately home.
There will be a 45k cycle a 15k walk and a 5k walk to chose from.
All money raised will go to The Lord Mayor's Charity Appeal; supporting Riding for the disabled, The Samaritans Leeds Branch and CREATE, helping the homeless and vulnerable of Leeds.
If attendees want an entry form, they can email
and she will send them one or, for Morley residents, they can pick one up at several places in Morley, Peaches and Cream on Wesley Street, Berties Diner and Althams in the precinct or Peter Batchelors at the top of Church Street.
